Conference “Information Technologies in Engineering”

Simmakers Ltd participated in the XV scientific conference “Information Technologies in Engineering”, held on 7-8 April 2015 at Giprotyumenneftegaz (R&D and engineering company, Tyumen, Russia).

As usual, the conference was attended by leading R&D institutes involved in the oil and gas industry: Giprovostokneft, Lukoil Engineering, SurgutNIPIneft, as well as software solutions vendors: Bentley Systems, ANSYS, CSoft and others. Among the conference participants were some of Simmakers Ltd customers: Fundamentstroyarkos, Tyumenneftegazproekt and our partners from NVIDIA.

The conference focused on topics such as new IT solutions, computer simulation technologies and the use of CAD and CAE systems in the oil and gas industry.

Article “Forecasting of Permafrost Thawing Around an Underground Cross-Country Pipeline”

Mar 31, 2015

The article “Forecasting of Permafrost Thawing Around an Underground Cross-Country Pipeline” was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal “Oil&Oil Products Pipeline Transportation: Science and Technologies” (№ 1 (17) 2015).

In the article, formation of thawing bulb around the cross-country pipeline is simulated in Frost 3D Universal software package. Presented computer simulation is based on the numerical solution of the heat equation in three-dimensional statement factoring phase transitions. The proposed technique can be applied at design and operation of underground pipelines in difficult geological and engineering conditions for an assessment of the thawing bulb formation. The knowledge of the thawing bulb size is necessary at calculation of the stress-strain state of a pipeline.

Simmakers Ltd. at the V Regional Conference Solit

Mar 20, 2015

Simmakers Ltd. participated in the V Regional Conference Solit, which was held on March 14-15, 2015 in Soligorsk.

As in previous years, the conference was organized into 3 simultaneous sessions: seminars, connected with programming; talks, devoted to IT topics in general; talks and events with a semi-IT focus. To relieve conference stress, participants were able to enjoy such events as Geek Fest, CoachPit, Mashpit, XXX2Dev meetup, IT career and regional start-ups events.

Frost 3D Universal Verification: Numerical Computation, Analytical Solution and Experimental Data

Mar 03, 2015

The mathematical model used in Frost 3D Universal has been verified against the precise analytical solution to the soil freezing problem and against experimental data obtained under laboratory conditions.

The results demonstrate the high accuracy of the numerical solutions obtained by the Frost 3D Universal software package. Comparison of the software’s numerical computations with exact analytical solutions shows that the error does not exceed 0.5%, and this figure approaches zero in Frost 3D Universal as the spatial step decreases.

Analysis of Foundation Deformation and Subsidence

Jan 19, 2015

The R&D Department of Simmakers Ltd. has introduced an article on the computer simulation of foundation deformation. The approach is based on numerical solution of the stationary differential equation in partial derivatives. This method allows you to predict the behavior of foundation and soils, taking elasticity and boundary conditions into account, enabling accurate simulation of subsidence.

In an already published article, we consider the main types of foundations on subsiding soils: the case when foundation is fastened to the raft and the case when the foundation slab rests on the ground surface or piles.

Simulation of a road in permafrost area

Road design in permafrost areas requires a special approach based on the thermal analyses of soil foundations and roadbeds to determine the necessary design parameters of the road, such as the height of embankment, the thickness of the thermal insulation layer, etc.

Implementation of Alternate Direction Implicit Method with CUDA

Nov 26, 2014
Simmakers specialists have analyzed the efficiency of applying CUDA technology to the implementation of the Douglas-Rachford scheme (alternating direction implicit method, ADI method). The ADI method is used to solve partial differential equations of the parabolic type, such as heat equations in three dimensions. It was found that the Douglas-Rachford scheme presented natural parallelism allowing for effective ADI mathematical solver parallelization with CUDA (Nvidia).

In the article, we provide calculation results demonstrating the performance acceleration for software-implemented Douglas-Rachford scheme using CUDA technology when compared with the implementation of the same scheme on a CPU.
