Frost 3D Universal Verification: Numerical Computation, Analytical Solution and Experimental Data

Mar 03, 2015

The mathematical model used in Frost 3D Universal has been verified against the precise analytical solution to the soil freezing problem and against experimental data obtained under laboratory conditions.

The results demonstrate the high accuracy of the numerical solutions obtained by the Frost 3D Universal software package. Comparison of the software’s numerical computations with exact analytical solutions shows that the error does not exceed 0.5%, and this figure approaches zero in Frost 3D Universal as the spatial step decreases.

The comparison between computational and experimental data shows that maximal discrepancy in frost depth never exceeds 5%. Note that the main contribution to the total error is due to inaccurate determination of the thermophysical properties of the soil.
