Automatic Geological Structure Reconstruction Method

Jul 24, 2014

When creating the geological models in specialized software packages, additional steps are usually necessary. For example, when reconstructing geological layers using borehole data, the grouping of layer segments must be done manually. For sites with large numbers of boreholes and layers, this becomes quite tedious for the user.

In the new method, the assignment of segments to corresponding geological layers is performed automatically. The user can refine the results by specifying additional input parameters besides the borehole data.

Simulation of the Ground Thaw Formations Around Oil Well

Jul 11, 2014

There is particular danger of thawing and further soil subsidence during oil and gas well operations in permafrost areas. As a result, permafrost thermal regime simulation is important during the design of production wells. Today, Frost 3D Universal software is the most convenient tool for performing such simulations.

Analyzing the relative distribution of unfrozen water content in the cross section of the borehole, we can determine the size of thaw bulbs around wellbores at specific points in time, draw conclusions about the effectiveness of borehole insulation and selected distances between them.

Application of ANSYS for Thermal Analysis of Permafrost Soils. Advantages of Frost 3D Universal

Jun 23, 2014

An engineering company has recently asked Simmakers to comment on the possibility of applying the finite-element package of ANSYS to the problems of ground thawing and thermal stabilization, and to explain the advantages of Frost 3D Universal software when solving such problems. Note that this issue has also been addressed by various specialists in dedicated forums, and conferences.

Mathematicians and experts in the field of thermal analysis and numerical simulation gave comprehensive comments regarding the advantages of Frost 3D Universal over Ansys for computer simulation of ground freezing and thawing problems.

FAQ for the New Version of Frost 3D Universal Software

Jun 12, 2014
After releasing the article “Thermal analysis of a lengthy section of a gas pipeline on permafrost” on our blog, we received questions from users, concerning the latest version of Frost 3D Universal software.

We would like to reiterate that the new 64-bit GPU version of Frost 3D Universal software was released in May, 2014. In this version, technological innovations were implemented which enabled the computation of computational meshes as large as 100 million nodes on a PC. The simulation model was demonstrated with the thermal analysis of a long section of pipeline lying on permafrost, with a mesh consisting of 58.5 million nodes.

Article “3D Computer Simulation of Ground Thaw Bulb Formations Including Ice Wedges Around the Pipeline”

Jun 05, 2014

The article “3D computer simulation of ground thaw bulb formations including ice wedges around the pipeline” was published in the industry-specific journal ”Pipeline transportation: theory and practice” (# 6 (40) 2013).

The main threat to the integrity of the underground pipeline is the ground settling under it, caused by the thawing of ice wedges. In the article, ground freezing and thawing with ice wedges around various pipeline intersections are numerically simulated with Frost 3D Universal software. The obtained results provide crucial data for the feasibility analysis of the pipeline construction, the pipeline route plan and subsequent evaluation of potential problems during operation.

Water Flow Factor Applied to the Problem of Heat Distribution in the Ground

May 21, 2014

When modeling physical processes in the ground, we often have to account for convective heat transfer due to filtration processes. Depending on the saturation degree and the value of water velocity in pores, there are several approaches to water flow modeling. Basement walls, underground constructions and many other in-ground sections of constructions are influenced by groundwater flow. The stability of beds and banks of water reservoirs and channels also depends on filtration around coastal terrain.

Record-breaking Achievements in the Frost 3D Universal Software: Simulation of a Lengthy Section of a Gas Pipeline

May 13, 2014

Prediction of the ground thaw formations around a kilometer-long section of a relatively long gas pipeline was implemented for the first time on a model discretized in 58 million nodes in the newest version of Frost 3D Universal software. Simulations of the ground thaw formations around the gas pipeline were performed for a 2-year period. For the computations, a PC with a quad-core CPU and 24 GB of RAM was used. The computation in Frost 3D Universal software was completed within 68 hours. The approximate computation time of the given model using the Tesla К40 video accelerator is 8 hours.
